How Camp Lejeune’s Water Became Toxic
In 1953, the United States Marine Corps established Camp Lejeune in North Carolina as a major training base for its East Coast operations. The camp was home to hundreds of thousands of Marines and their families over the next few decades. These chemicals are known to cause a variety of serious health problems, including cancer, liver damage, kidney damage, and birth defects. The contamination of the camp’s water supply led to hundreds of thousands of veterans and their families suffering from these health problems.
